Device Repairs Cumbria
Your laptop will not turn on. Your desktop PC is running so slowly it is effectively unusable. Your phone screen is cracked and the touch is not responding. Your tablet is stuck in an endless restart loop. Whatever device problem you are facing, the team at Whamos — operating through our sister organisation Whamos Training and Development CiC — can diagnose it accurately, fix it properly, and get you back to work as quickly as possible. We carry out repairs on laptops, desktop PCs, phones, and tablets from our base at the South Cumbria Skills Exchange on Devonshire Road in Millom, Cumbria.
We approach every repair with complete honesty. We diagnose before we quote — you will never receive a repair bill for work you did not agree to. If a repair is not economically worthwhile given the age and value of the device, we will tell you that clearly and help you make the right decision — whether that means replacing the device, recovering your data before it fails completely, or accepting the repair. If we can fix it, we fix it properly — not with a temporary workaround that will fail again in three months and send you back to us.
What We Repair
Laptops & Notebooks
We carry out a comprehensive range of laptop repairs including: broken or dead screen replacement, cracked display replacement, keyboard repairs and full keyboard replacements, battery replacement for laptops with significantly reduced battery life, overheating diagnosis and resolution (thermal paste replacement, heatsink cleaning, fan replacement), physical hinge repairs, charging port repair or replacement, operating system reinstallation for severely corrupted systems, full data recovery including from partially failed drives, virus and malware removal and thorough system cleaning, and performance optimisation for sluggish machines.
We work on all major laptop brands including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Samsung, Toshiba, and Apple MacBooks. For MacBook repairs, we work on Intel-based models and can advise on Apple Silicon models where manufacturer restrictions apply.
Desktop PCs and All-in-One Computers
Desktop repair services include hardware upgrades (RAM, SSD installation for improved performance, graphics card upgrades), faulty component replacement and diagnosis, comprehensive virus and malware removal, power supply unit testing and replacement, complete performance tuning and optimisation, operating system reinstallation, data recovery from failed drives, and advice on whether to repair or replace older machines. We also carry out custom PC builds — see below.
Phones & Tablets
Phone and tablet repair services include screen and digitiser replacement, battery replacement for devices with significantly degraded battery life, charging port repair and replacement for devices that charge unreliably or not at all, software issues including factory resets and software restoration, network unlocking (where legally permitted — own-network locked devices only), and data recovery from damaged, water-damaged, or malfunctioning devices. We work on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android devices across all major brands including Samsung, Google Pixel, Huawei, OnePlus, and others.
Our Pricing — Transparent and Upfront
We operate on a transparent two-stage pricing model. Every device starts with a full diagnostic assessment for £30. This covers a thorough investigation of all faults — not just the presenting symptom — and results in a written fault report and a clear quote for the repair before any work begins. If you choose not to proceed with the repair after the diagnostic, you pay only the £30 assessment fee and take your device back. If you do proceed, the £30 diagnostic fee is absorbed into the total repair cost — you pay the repair price only, not the diagnostic fee on top.
Repairs — From £45: Actual repair cost confirmed after diagnostic assessment. Hardware repairs, screen and battery replacement, virus removal, software fixes, operating system reinstallation, and data recovery are all priced individually based on the specific work required.
Custom PC Build — From £200 (labour only): Professional assembly, cable management, BIOS and UEFI configuration, operating system installation, driver setup and configuration, and a full functionality test. Components sourced at trade prices and charged at cost — or you can supply your own components.
We Also Supply and Source Replacement Devices
When our diagnostic assessment indicates that a device is not worth repairing — typically older machines where the repair cost approaches or exceeds the device’s current market value — we can source a suitable new or quality-refurbished replacement at competitive prices. We advise on the specification that matches your needs and budget, supply the device, set it up fully including all your applications and preferences, migrate your data from the old machine, and ensure everything is working exactly as expected before handover. We can also help you set up cloud backup to protect your data going forward.
Home Visits Available
If you cannot bring your device to our Millom base — whether due to mobility limitations, transport constraints, or because you have a desktop machine that is impractical to move — we offer home visit appointments outside our standard office hours (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9am to 4pm). Call or text 07470 412889 to arrange an out-of-hours home visit at a time that suits you. We cover South Cumbria as standard and are happy to discuss travel to other parts of Cumbria for the right job.
Custom PC Builds from £200
A custom-built PC offers significantly better value for money than a pre-built machine at the same price point. You specify exactly the components you need for your specific use case — gaming at high resolution, creative work with large files, fast general office use, home media playback — and pay only for what matters for your application. You get a machine built properly, not manufactured to a mass-market specification that compromises in ways that do not suit you.
Our custom PC build service charges £200 for labour — assembly, cable management with a clean, professional finish, BIOS and UEFI configuration, operating system installation and configuration, driver setup, and a full functionality test under load. Components are sourced at trade prices and charged at cost. You can bring us components you have already purchased, or we can source a complete component list for you from a specification we agree together, drawing on current availability and the best value options for each role in your build.
